Open Heavens 10 August 2025 Sunday – Don’t Allow Discouragement
MEMORISE: And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the LORD his God. 1 Samuel 30:6
READ: Numbers 11:4-17 Open Heavens 10 August 2025
4 And the mixt multitude that was among them fell a lusting: and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat?
5 We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlick:
6 But now our soul is dried away: there is nothing at all, beside this manna, before our eyes.
7 And the manna was as coriander seed, and the colour thereof as the colour of bdellium.
8 And the people went about, and gathered it, and ground it in mills, or beat it in a mortar, and baked it in pans, and made cakes of it: and the taste of it was as the taste of fresh oil.
9 And when the dew fell upon the camp in the night, the manna fell upon it.
10 Then Moses heard the people weep throughout their families, every man in the door of his tent: and the anger of the Lord was kindled greatly; Moses also was displeased.
11 And Moses said unto the Lord, Wherefore hast thou afflicted thy servant? and wherefore have I not found favour in thy sight, that thou layest the burden of all this people upon me?
12 Have I conceived all this people? have I begotten them, that thou shouldest say unto me, Carry them in thy bosom, as a nursing father beareth the sucking child, unto the land which thou swarest unto their fathers?
13 Whence should I have flesh to give unto all this people? for they weep unto me, saying, Give us flesh, that we may eat.
14 I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me.
15 And if thou deal thus with me, kill me, I pray thee, out of hand, if I have found favour in thy sight; and let me not see my wretchedness.
16 And the Lord said unto Moses, Gather unto me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom thou knowest to be the elders of the people, and officers over them; and bring them unto the tabernacle of the congregation, that they may stand there with thee.
17 And I will come down and talk with thee there: and I will take of the spirit which is upon thee, and will put it upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with thee, that thou bear it not thyself alone.

Bible In One Year: Jeremiah 22-24

Message: – Open Heavens 10 August 2025 Sunday Daily Devotional
In today’s Bible reading, the Israelites were murmuring and weeping, saying, “We want meat; we are tired of eating manna.” They had been murmuring consistently for 40 years, and Moses had been coping, but this time around, he told God, “I didn’t give birth to these people. Why are You asking me to carry their burden? Kill me because I’m tired of all this.” God replied, “Since you say the burden is too much, get me 70 men, and I’ll take of the spirit on you and put it on them.”
When you think about the fact that the anointing upon Moses was divided by 70, you’ll realise that the new Moses was less anointed than the previous one. Because of this, not long after that, in Numbers 20:7-12, the man God Himself described as the meekest man on the earth (Numbers 12:3) erupted in anger. The anointing that had allowed him to cope for 40 years had been depleted due to his words during a time of discouragement.
Discouragement can make people say things that would limit them in life and negatively impact their destiny. Elijah also allowed his words in a time of discouragement to put an abrupt end to his ministry. After calling down fire on Mount Carmel, Jezebel threatened him, and he fled. He became so discouraged as he ran away that he asked God to kill him. Thankfully, God didn’t fulfil his wish; instead, He sent an angel to feed him (1 Kings 19:1-8). Afterwards, however, He gave him his last assignment to anoint Jehu, Hazael, and Elisha, his replacement (1 Kings 19:15-16). His ministry ended when he allowed discouragement to make him say the wrong things. John the Baptist also got so discouraged that he began to doubt everything he had earlier declared.
He had declared concerning Jesus, “Behold the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29). Yet, he was the same person who sent his disciples to ask Jesus, “Are you the One to come or should we look for another?” (Luke 7:19-20). Not long after that, he was beheaded (Luke 9:7-9).
Beloved, while you cannot stop discouraging circumstances from happening, you can choose how to respond to them. Like David, you can encourage yourself in the Lord, as seen in today’s memory verse. God is able to keep you from falling (Jude 1:24). He is also able to give you a mighty turnaround, but you must put your trust in Him. He is more than able to see you through any discouraging circumstances that may come your way.
Key Point – Open Heavens 10 August 2025
Do not allow discouragement to make you say the wrong things.
Open Heavens 10 August 2025 Commentary
Our topic for today once more says, don’t allow discouragement. There is no doubt that when you look around today, there are more than enough reasons for a person to get discouraged. By just turning on the TV and listening to the news, you could even get discouraged. Paying attention to what the doctors are saying could leave one even depressed. It is no longer news that so many people cannot even have three square meals a day. There are so many bills piling up, so many needs with limited resources to cut for them. It is possible that that is not even your own problem. You may have all the good things of life but maybe your children, your spouse, your family or even your health may not be in good shape. It is also possible that you have chased something for so long. You have put all that you have into that particular project, yet it does not seem to be coming through. You may have done all that you know to do without any tangible result. We are admonished in today’s devotional to be of good cheer. We are told to not be discouraged. We can see from today’s devotional that discouragement can be a tool of the enemy against God’s plan and the great destiny he has for his children. Maybe you are at a point in life you are currently in a season, and it has left you with so many questions. Do not be discouraged.
Today’s study reveals to us that discouragement has the capacity to make people act in certain ways which may be detrimental to God’s plan for their lives. A discouraged person, for example, could begin to utter words they should not utter out of the place of discouragement. We saw in today’s study the case of the children of Israel. We saw in today’s study also the case of Elijah and that of John the Baptist also. It is obvious that the enemy is very tricky and many times he capitalizes upon the things that we say or do during those times of discouragement to cut short, glorious destinies.
Today’s study reveals to us that discouragement is not just a feeling. It is a weapon of the enemy. It clouds our judgment. Like I mentioned earlier, it could make a person speak words which can have lasting spiritual consequences. We are made to understand in today’s study that you may not be able to stop discouraging situations from coming. However, how we handle them really matters. Maybe that situation has pressed you to a corner. Dear brothers and sisters, listen. God has not forgotten about you. He has not abandoned you. He has not brought you this far to leave you stranded. How can we be victorious in times like this? can be victorious over discouragement when we choose to profess the right things. So instead of saying things like my own is finished, speak positively.
Declare that all is well. Be like David who we are told encouraged himself in the Lord. When you try to picture the situation that David was in at that time, you’d realize that he probably was left all alone to himself. No encouragement came from anybody. In fact, his men were planning to stone him. In times like this, learn to look up to God. Forget about what man is saying. Forget about who is by your side or not. And look unto the Lord, the source of all help. Also, guard your heart with all diligence. Guard your mouth also, your speech. Never allow the enemy to use your own words against you. Remember that scripture tells us that God is able to keep us from falling. Hallelujah.
Dear brothers and sisters, discouragement may come but ensure that it never knocks you down. Shake off the heaviness. Let gratitude replace grumbling. Fill your mouth with thanksgiving and praise. Even when the feelings have not yet changed because when you encourage yourself in the Lord, you invite his presence. And in his presence, we are made to understand that there’s fullness of joy. Hallelujah. I would like us at this point to bow our heads. What is that issue, that situation, that reason for concern, that thing that has been weighing you down, that has been making you sad, that has taken away your joy. Bring it before the Lord today. Refuse to be discouraged. Refuse to be depressed. Say, “Father, I lay it at your feet. I lay my burden, my cares, my concerns before you. I submit them today at your feet in the name of Jesus. Tell the Lord today, say, “Father, do that which only you can do.” Tell the Lord today, say, “Father, let hope arise out of every hopeless situation today. Let there be newness. Let there be freshness. Replace every garment of sorrow, heaviness, pain and dismay with joy and laughter, thanksgiving and praise unto your name in the name of Jesus.” Declare today in the name of Jesus, say, “I receive my testimony. I testify.” Bless the name of the Lord. Give him thanks. Worship and adore his holy name. Thank you, our faithful father.
Open Heavens 10 August 2025 Sunday Hymn
Hymn 21: Standing On The Promises Of Christ My King
1 Standing on the promises of Christ, my King!
Through eternal ages let His praises ring.
“Glory in the highest!” I will shout and sing,
standing on the promises of God.
Refrain:
Standing, standing,
standing on the promises of God, my Savior;
standing, standing,
I’m standing on the promises of God.
2 Standing on the promises that cannot fail!
When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail,
by the living Word of God I shall prevail,
standing on the promises of God. [Refrain]
3 Standing on the promises, I now can see
perfect, present cleansing in the blood for me;
standing in the liberty where Christ makes free,
standing on the promises of God. [Refrain]
4 Standing on the promises of Christ, the Lord,
bound to Him eternally by love’s strong cord,
overcoming daily with the Spirit’s Sword,
standing on the promises of God. [Refrain]
5 Standing on the promises I cannot fall,
list’ning ev’ry moment to the Spirit’s call,
resting in my Savior as my all in all,
standing on the promises of God. [Refrain]
