15 Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints,

16 Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers;

17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:

18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,

19 And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,

20 Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,

21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:

22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,

23 Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.

Bible In One Year: Daniel 1-3

MESSAGE: – Open Heavens 10 September 2025 Wednesday Daily Devotional

Besides physical eyes, I believe that every human has mental eyes, which the Bible refers to as the eyes of understanding. In Ephesians 1:18, Paul said,

“I pray that the eyes of your understanding be enlightened.” In other words, he was saying, “I pray that your eyes of understanding be opened.”

The eyes of your understanding are very important. According to Deuteronomy 1:13, understanding is one of the major requirements for becoming a leader. Hence, to be an effective leader, you must have understanding and the eyes of your understanding must be fully opened.

This was why Solomon asked God for an understanding heart to lead His people (1 Kings 3:9). The state of the mental eyes is what makes the difference between people who are highly educated, moderately educated, or illiterate.

I worked as a tutor at Ondo Boys High School in South- Western Nigeria before enrolling for my undergraduate studies. In those days, there were 40 class periods per week, and I was made to teach 36 of them. I worked alongside a university graduate who had to teach for only 23 class periods every week, yet he always complained that the school was overstretching him. My salary was about 15 pounds a month, while his salary was 60 pounds a month. I was surprised about his complaints because he was earning about four times more than I was earning, even though he was teaching fewer class periods than I was.

One day, I asked him, “Why are you complaining? You have fewer periods to teach compared to me.” He replied, “I am not being paid for what I do now. I am being paid for the work I had done on my brain in the past.”

My understanding could not be compared to his because I only had a secondary school certificate while he had a university degree, so we were paid differently, based on our levels of understanding. If you want to be successful, your mental eyes need to be opened. You need to study hard and try new things to get better outcomes.

A wealthy man once said that the more you learn, the more you earn. Someone else said that readers are leaders. Those who will be great in life value learning more than entertainment; therefore, they keep on learning. The day you decide that there is nothing more to learn, your mental eyes will begin to go dim.

Beloved, the more you learn, the more the eyes of your understanding receive light. Therefore, make up your mind never to stop learning.

Praise the Lord.

Our topic for today once more is mental eyes. Yesterday we studied the topic your eyes where our father and the lord made us understand the importance of our eyes. We also saw from that study that even our lord Jesus Christ understands the importance of our eyes. No wonder during his earthly ministry, he always healed those who came to him with issues with their eyes. We learned that our eyes are gates and that we can let either light or darkness into our lives from the things that we let our eyes dwell upon. We were admonished to only let our eyes dwell upon things that are pure. Hallelujah. Today we have before us the topic mental eyes. And we are made to understand from this study that apart from our physical eyes, every human being also has mental eyes which we are made to understand that scripture calls the eyes of understanding.

This reveals to us that there’s an inner sight that is beyond what the physical eyes can see. These mental eyes enable us to grasp knowledge, to make sense of the truth, and to apply wisdom. So, without these mental eyes being opened, a man may be alive physically but remain blind mentally. He may be unable to discern opportunities. He may be unable to apply knowledge and even make progress in life. So, the physical eyes help us to see the natural world around us. But the mental eyes help us to process it, to understand it, and to make decisions that shape our destinies. In today’s study, our father in the lord also explains to us and makes us understand some importance of mental eyes. He makes us understand that this is a very important criteria for leaders. There must be men of understanding. So, if you want to be a leader, you want to be a highflyer, you must trust God for understanding that is beyond what meets the eye. It is understanding that distinguishes an average fellow from a high achiever and it is understanding that separates a wise leader from a foolish leader. In today’s study, we also see the high value of understanding.

In today’s study, our father-in-the-Lord  tells us of the story of when he was a tutor at theondo boys’ high school. And the reason why he was not paid as much as the other fellow who had a university degree and taught less classes was because of the investment upon the mind. The other fellow had spent more time sharpening his mind, building his thought, and having more understanding. And that in turn gave him value that commanded a higher reward. Beloved, some people may think that is unfair. However, this is the power of the eyes of understanding. Life rewards men not merely by their physical labor but by the level of their mental investment. If your understanding is shallow, your returns will be small. But when the eyes of your understanding are enlightened, your capacity increases. your influence grows and your reward multiplies. Let us take a look at why many people struggle without progress.

We are made to understand today that many remain poor not because they do not work hard but because they do not work smart. Their mental eyes are closed. They do not think it is a big deal to spend hours on entertainment while they invest little or no time at all in learning. You see them devoting energy to complaining but they neglect the discipline of study and self-improvement. This is the story of many in today’s generation. And this is why some people though highly religious they remain very unfruitful. You would find them praying for success but failing to add diligence to study and discipline to their daily habits. Beloved, God wants us to be fruitful. That is why he wants us to combine prayers with the pursuit of knowledge. If the eyes of your understanding remain blind, opportunities will pass before you and you will not even recognize them. So, how can your mental eyes be opened? The answer is to keep learning.

Understanding comes by seeking knowledge, by observing, by meditating, and by applying what you learn. You get understanding when you expose your mind to truth and you allow the Holy Spirit to shed his light upon your reasoning. Constantly open yourself to fresh understanding. Joseph was a man of understanding. That was why he was able to see dreams and his eyes of understanding helped him interpret them. How about Daniel? His understanding was 10 times better than that of his peers. And that was why kings sought his counsel across different administrations. Beloved, if your mental eyes are enlightened, you will never remain stranded in life. People will seek your counsel. Even nations will look to you for answers.

I would like us at this point to bow our heads and appreciate the Lord would say, “Father, thank you for the gift of mental eyes. Thank you for the gift of our understanding being enlightened. Thank you for mental eyes that see beyond the physical. We are grateful. Receive our thanks in the name of Jesus. Now ask the Lord today. Say, Lord, please enlighten the eyes of my understanding today in the name of Jesus. Enlighten the eyes of my understanding. Let the light of your understanding flood my mind. Help me to understand things that are beyond what the eyes can see. In the name of Jesus, ask the Lord today. Say, “Father, please deliver me from the spirit of ignorance and mental blindness in Jesus’ name. Please take away every spirit of ignorance from my heart, from my mind, from my understanding. Take away every form of mental blindness from my life in the name of Jesus. Help me to see and to understand in the name of Jesus.” Ask the Lord today. Say, “Father, please help me to value learning more than entertainment in the name of Jesus.” was asking for the grace to give ourselves to study over entertainment in the name of Jesus that we will value building our minds over just entertaining it in the name of Jesus Christ. Ask the Lord today say father please give me wisdom and understanding that will set me apart for greatness. The wisdom and understanding that will make men to come and seek me. Lord grant unto me in the name of Jesus. that understanding that would make me a problem solver. Lord, I receive today in the name of Jesus.

Ask the Lord today say, “Father, please open my eyes to opportunities around me. Help me also with the grace to seize them when I see them in Jesus name.” Ask the Lord today. Say, “Father, open my eyes. There are many opportunities around us.” Say, “Lord, open my mental understanding. Let me see opportunities. Let me recognize them. Let me seize them. and let me make great use of them in the name of Jesus and let me make profit of it to your glory in the name of Jesus. Now ask the Lord today say, “Father, let the light of your word continually illuminate my mind in Jesus’ name. Let the light of your word, Lord, continually shine upon my mind. Let it make my mind extremely fruitful. Let everything that enters into my mind come to life in the name of Jesus.” begin to bless the name of the Lord and thank him for answers to prayers. He is good. He’s gracious. He is faithful. He hears us when we call. Father, we are grateful. Take all the glory. Receive our thanks, dear Lord. We worship and we adore you. Take all honor and adoration in Jesus’ name we have prayed. Amen.
