MEMORISE:Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,”Philippians 3:13

8 The Lord shall command the blessing upon thee in thy storehouses, and in all that thou settest thine hand unto; and he shall bless thee in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

9 The Lord shall establish thee an holy people unto himself, as he hath sworn unto thee, if thou shalt keep the commandments of the Lord thy God, and walk in his ways.

10 And all people of the earth shall see that thou art called by the name of the Lord; and they shall be afraid of thee.

11 And the Lord shall make thee plenteous in goods, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy ground, in the land which the Lord sware unto thy fathers to give thee.

12 The Lord shall open unto thee his good treasure, the heaven to give the rain unto thy land in his season, and to bless all the work of thine hand: and thou shalt lend unto many nations, and thou shalt not borrow.

13 And the Lord shall make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath; if that thou hearken unto the commandments of the Lord thy God, which I command thee this day, to observe and to do them:

MESSAGE: – Open Heavens 2 October 2025 Thursday Daily Devotional

If you hate something, you will do everything to avoid it. When I was in secondary school, I and two of my friends were the best in mathematics. However, even though we scored above 90%, our mathematics teacher would always tell us that we didn’t do well because we didn’t score 100%. At last, one day, we scored 100%, and we said, “Let’s go and see him to hear what he will say now.” We got to him, rejoicing, but our joy was cut short when he said, “Your mates are in the university, solving advanced maths, and you are rejoicing over 100% in elementary maths.” His comment made me hate anything less than the absolute best. This is why I get disturbed when I see people celebrating mediocrity.

Years ago, when secondary school results in Nigeria were presented as Grade 1, 2,3, and Pass, the principal of a particular college in Lagos was rejoicing because, for the first time in the school’s history, one of the students got a Grade 3 result. However, another college principal wept because, for the first time, a student went as low as having a Grade 3 result.

As seen in today’s Bible reading, God’s will for His children is that they will be above ONLY. Hence, no Christian should ever settle for average. If you think you’ve attained your greatest height, you must know that it is someone else’s starting point. In Ezekiel 47:1-12, God showed Ezekiel a man with a measuring line in his hand, and for every thousand cubits he measured, the water level rose. It started from the ankle to the knee and then to the waist before it became a mighty river. Some people reach the ankle level of success and think they have arrived; they don’t understand that there are greater levels of success waiting ahead of them.

In 2 Kings 2:1-15, while the sons of the prophets were content with being average, Elisha pressed in for a double portion of Elijah’s spirit. The sons of the prophet knew it was time for Elijah to be taken away, and they even knew the day it would happen. However, they were satisfied with having revelation without power. Elisha, on the other hand, didn’t settle for average, and the Lord used him so mightily that we can never forget his name. People who settle for average never stand out.

Beloved, make up your mind to be the absolute best that God has destined you to be. Don’t settle for average.

Open Heavens 2 October 2025 Thursday Commentary

Praise the Lord.

Our topic for today once more says you must hate average. And in today’s study, we are reminded that mediocrity is not the destiny of a child of God. The Lord who has called us is the most high and his plan is that we live above only and not beneath. Yet sadly, many believers today are content with having just enough. They are happy when they have something at least and they feel that is okay. They do not want to push for more. They rejoice over small victories and settle for little progresses. They forget that our father owns all power, all wisdom and all resources. The truth is that if you hate mediocrity, you will pursue excellence. If you love convenience, you will settle for average. But God is not pleased when his children remain at the level of having just enough. He is not happy when we are only just trying to survive and we are content with remaining at that level. God wants us to rise from glory to glory, from strength to strength. He also wants us his children to rise from one level of anointing to the other.

Scripture makes us understand that God has told us he would make us the head and not the tail. He says that we shall be above only and not beneath. This is not a suggestion. It is a covenant promise. God has destined his children. He has destined you and I to lead and to excel, not to take the back seat. When you look at the story of Daniel and his friends, you’d see excellence there. They honored God. They distinguished themselves. And the result was that they were found 10 times. Not one, not two, not five, not even eight, but 10 times better than all their peers. Medicrity was not their portion because they aligned with God’s standard.

It is important for us to note that one of the dangers of celebrating average is that it blinds us from stepping into greater possibilities. You remember the story of the 12 spies who were sent to spy the land of Canaan. 10 of them returned with fear and settled for less. They told themselves and the other people that we are not able to go up against the people for they are stronger than we. They saw themselves as grasshoppers and even accepted defeat before the battle began. But Caleb and Joshua refused to settle for average. They saw the same giants but also saw the greatness of their God. Their faith led them into the promised land while the rest perished in the wilderness. When you accept mediocrity, you remain stuck at the level of the majority. But when you press for excellence, you enter into God’s greater destiny for your life.

Always remember also that growth in God is progressive. It is so sad that many people today, especially our young ones, want to make it big instantly. They want it big and they want it right now. But that is against God’s process. In Ezekiel 47:3-5, which was talked about in today’s study, we read that the waters rose from the ankles to the knees to the loins and finally became a river too deep to pass. Beloved, this shows us that spiritual growth, success and impact are progressive. The danger comes when a person reaches the ankle level and decides that that is enough. The truth remains that at every point in time we are at a particular level. We are either at the ankle level, at the knee level, at the waist level or beyond.

So beloved, where are you right now? Is it ankle level Christianity where you are just saved or knee level where you pray occasionally or waist level where you know the word but you lack power? God wants you to keep pressing until rivers of living waters flow out of your life. Those who embrace average lifestyle never make lasting impact. They are forgotten quickly. But those who press beyond average are remembered for generations. Take a look at our father in the Lord for example. The great impact which God has done through him is undeniable. He has not only influenced his generation, his impact is transgenerational. And we are grateful to God for the gift of him. One big question we can also ask ourselves today is how can we refuse mediocrity? If you will refuse mediocrity then you must renew your mind. Stop comparing yourself to those who are behind you. Measure yourself by God’s standard. You must also discipline yourself because excellence requires sacrifice. You must seek the spirit’s empowerment also. You cannot do it by yourself. Human effort alone is not enough. Also, learn to refuse to stop at one victory. Yesterday’s success is not today’s standard. God is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think. Hallelujah.

Beloved, God wants us to make up our minds today never to settle for less than the best that he has planned for us. So he wants us to press into higher levels and remain hungry for more. I would like us at this point to bow our heads and we’d be asking the Lord today would say, “Father, please deliver me from every spirit of mediocrity in Jesus’ name.” Ask the Lord today. Say, “Father, please take away from my life the spirit of convenience at a low level. Let me not be satisfied with less than you have planned for me in the name of Jesus. Lord, take away from my life the spirit of average. Help me Lord to push and press for the very best you have in store for me in the name of Jesus. Ask the Lord today. Say, “Father, please give me a hunger for excellence. Help me to continually push for the best. Let me stop at nothing till I reach that which you have planned for me in the name of Jesus.” Ask the Lord today. Say, “Father, help me to press forward and never settle for yesterday’s success.

Let yesterday’s success be a stepping stone to the greater heights you have for me in the name of Jesus. Let it be a motivation for me to press for more. Also ask the Lord today. Say, “Father, by your spirit, please take me from ankle level to the fullness of the rivers of living waters in Jesus’ name.” Ask the Lord that our hunger for him will know no end. It will know no stopping point in the name of Jesus. Tell him today, say, “Lord, even in my walk with you, let me continue to desire more and more and more in the name of Jesus, fill me to overflow. Let me have more of you in the name of Jesus.” Ask the Lord today. Say, “Father, let my life reflect your greatness and cause me to stand out for you to your glory in the name of Jesus.” Say, “Father, let me represent you everywhere I go. Let me manifest and reflect your greatness in the name of Jesus.” begin to bless the name of the Lord and thank him for answers to prayers. Worship him, adore him. Father, we are grateful. Take all our praise. Take all honor and adoration. In Jesus’ name we have prayed. Amen.

Open Heavens 2 October 2025 Thursday Hymn

HYMN 24 – I Want To Be Like Jesus

1 I want to be like Jesus,

So lowly and so meek;

For no one marked an angry word,

That ever heard Him speak.

2 I want to be like Jesus,

So frequently in prayer;

Alone upon the mountain top,

He met His Father there.

3 I want to be like Jesus,

I never, never find

That He, though persecuted was

To anyone unkind.

4 I want to be like Jesus,

Engaged in doing good;

So that of me it may be said,

“He hath done what he could.”

5 I want to be like Jesus,

Who sweetly said to all,

“Let little children come to Me,”

I would obey the call.

6 But oh, I’m not like Jesus,

As anyone may see;

O gentle Savior, send Thy grace,

And make me like to thee.
