6 Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise:

7 Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler,

8 Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest.

9 How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?

10 Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:

11 So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man.

MESSAGE: – Open Heavens 3 September 2025 Wednesday Daily Devotional

God rewards those who diligently seek Him (Hebrews 11:6); He does not reward the lazy. If you want to be successful, then you must be diligent. I and one of my friends got born again at a time when making positive confessions was becoming popular among Christians. At that time, the popular teaching was, ‘All you need to do is to say what you want repeatedly, and it will be yours? This friend of mine was very diligent with making these positive confessions. He would wake up in the morning and say, “I have a brand-new car, in the mighty name of Jesus.” Five years later, he was yet to own a car.

One day, he asked me, “What’s your secret? I’ve been making positive confessions without tangible results.” I replied, “You wake up at 10 am in the morning, and at that time, I would have already put in five hours of work. Also, instead of working, you start making confessions. I’m sorry, but you will keep walking everywhere you go for a long time to come if you don’t change.”

Some people have become so attached to motivational speaking. They are usually the first to register for conferences; however, when it is time to put in the work, they are often nowhere to be found. No amount of confessions or unapplied knowledge can turn a lazy fellow into a high flyer. A fellow who doesn’t wake up every day to make positive confessions or listen to smooth-talking motivational speakers will still succeed if he or she knows how to work hard.

Although I’m in my 80s, I still go about doing God’s work diligently. When many other people are sleeping, I am walking about at night, praying. I don’t preach shallow sermons; if you listen to my sermons, you will notice that I make reference to many Bible passages.

These things don’t come by just loafing around. Success in life is not automatic; being born a prince or princess does not mean that a fellow will succeed in life. No matter how much wealth a fellow inherits, if he or she is lazy and refuses to put in the work to multiply the wealth, that fellow will eventually squander everything and begin to suffer. Proverbs 18:9 says that a lazy person is a brother to him who is a great waster.

Beloved, laziness will make you waste privileges. It will also make you unprepared to maximise opportunities. Do not give laziness a chance; banish it from every area of your life.

Open Heavens 3 September 2025 Wednesday Commentary

Praise the Lord.

Our topic for today once more says banish laziness. In today’s study, our father and the Lord reminds us that our God is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him. That scripture reveals to us that God does not just reward anybody. He rewards those who diligently seek him. emphasis on diligence. The truth remains that God does not reward laziness. He does not reward idleness or carelessness. In fact, one of the greatest hindrances to many destinies is laziness. Many people have received great promises from God. Many have even been given great opportunities too. Yet, many of them see little results because diligence is missing in their lives.

Today’s devotional is a call to examine our lives deeply. We must ask ourselves serious questions and give ourselves sincere answers too. We must ask ourselves, are we putting in the effort needed to see God’s promises being fulfilled in our lives or are we hiding under spirituality? Are we hiding under motivational words like our father in the Lord points out in today’s study while we are neglecting the discipline of hard work? It is my prayer for us today that the Lord himself would open our eyes to embrace diligence so that our lives would overflow with his rewards in Jesus’ name. You would recall that yesterday we studied the topic faith without works. And in that study our father and the lord made it very clear to us that if you are not doing anything in line with the faith that you claim to have that faith is dead. He made us understand the importance of taking the bold step of faith, walking in line with what you believe God for instead of just hanging around with the unrealistic expectation that things will begin to happen around you just because you have faith alone. As we proceed in today’s study, we also learned that positive confessions are not bad.

However, they can become dangerous if they replace your efforts. If you are a student for example and all that you are saying, is I am the head and not the tail. I can never fail then get ready for a shocker. If you are into business and all that you do is just confess positively without putting any effort into business without adding diligence to your faith you may be eventually left behind. Today’s study points clearly to us that laziness waste privileges. Proverbs 18:9 tells us that the lazy person is brother to the waster like our father in the Lord points out to us in today’s study. This means that laziness does not only destroy efforts. It wastes opportunities.

Imagine a person who has a great opportunity yet cannot maximize it. Probably because of laziness or the absence of diligence. The fact remains that not everyone would have a second chance. Sometimes that may just be that person’s only chance for a great change of story. You can imagine the pain and regret of that fellow even after many years whenever they would remember that incident. Today’s study makes us understand that success is not automatic. Success does not happen by chance. You don’t stumble upon success. Even if God has destined greatness for you, we learned from today’s study that if diligence is absent, you may never walk into it. I remember a story. I think it is a fictional one shared by someone. You probably know the story too about two young men. One was told you’d be great. You would be a king. And the other was told he was destined to be poor. The one who was told he would be king went on to celebrate and jubilate. He was enjoying life hoping for when he would be crowned king. The other man who was told he was destined for doom separated himself. He was diligent enough to start a great farm. He put in much hard work and eventually became a very successful farmer. Years later, there was farming, and the people of the community remembered the great farmer. He became greatly sought after and was made their king. The other man who was lazily roaming around waiting to be king later had nothing. He was left empty-handed. Do not be like the first man who refused to put in the necessary work. God rewards diligence.

Diligence also keeps you prepared for opportunities when they show up. A lazy man would likely be unprepared when opportunities come knocking. Today’s study reveals to us also that diligence attracts divine rewards. This means that God himself supervises the blessings and the rewards of those who are diligent. The popular scripture Proverbs 22:29 tells us, “Seeest thou a man diligent in his business.” It says, “He shall stand before kings. He shall not stand before mean men.” Hardworking believers are the ones God positions for visibility and greatness. This reminds me of the story of one of the engineers I worked with at a point in time. He was also a member of the redeemed Christian church of God. Very diligent. Some years later, even after parting ways, I still hear of the good things that God is doing in his life, the opportunities that God is bringing his way. And I am not surprised.

Beloved, diligence is the bridge between your current state and your divine destiny. So, practical lessons we learned from today’s study include the fact that diligence must be seen in every area of our lives. This includes our spiritual work where we must have consistency in prayer, in the study of the word, and in fellowship. In our careers and businesses, God expects us to develop skills. He wants us to be excellent and to demonstrate hard work. In our relationships, God wants us to nurture them with love, with time and patience. In our personal growth, he wants us to avoid procrastination. God wants us to set goals and follow through with them.

Today I’d like us to bow our heads and ask the Lord would say, “Father, in the name of Jesus, please deliver me from the spirit of laziness and procrastination in Jesus’ name.” Open your mouth and ask the Lord today. Say, “Father, if there may be any residue of laziness in me, any residue of procrastination, I will do it later, I will do it tomorrow.” Say, “Lord, please take it out of my life in the name of Jesus.” Why not ask the Lord today? Say, “Father, in the name of Jesus, baptize me with fresh zeal, fresh desire, fresh grace for diligence in the name of Jesus. Grant me the grace, oh Lord, for diligence in every area of my life, in my family life, my relationships, in my career or business, in my spiritual work, even in my personal growth.” Lord, grant me the grace for diligence in the name of Jesus. Ask the Lord today say father please help me to combine faith with action. Let me do the works of faith in the name of Jesus. Also ask the Lord today say father by your mercy as I remain diligent, please bring me before kings in Jesus name.

Ask the Lord today say father as I remain diligent bring great opportunities my way grants me the grace to recognize them and to seize them maximizing them to your glory in the name of Jesus. Maybe there are opportunities that you now see how you missed. Ask the Lord today. Say, “Father, by your mercy, please let there be restoration for me in Jesus’s name. Let there be a second chance. And please grant me the grace to seize them properly and to maximize them this time around in the name of Jesus. Begin to give the Lord thanks. Just worship him. Bless his name. Adore him. Father, we worship you. Receive our thanks, dear Lord. In Jesus’ name we have prayed.” Amen.

Open Heavens 3 September 2025 Wednesday Hymn

HYMN 32: To The Work! To The Work! We Are Servants Of God

1 To the work! to the work! we are servants of God,

Let us follow the path that our Master has trod;

With the balm of His counsel our strength to renew,

Let us do with our might what our hands find to do.

Refrain:

Toiling on, toiling on,

Toiling on, toiling on:

Let us hope, let us watch,

And labor till the Master comes.

2 To the work! to the work! let the hungry be fed;

To the fountain of life let the weary be led;

In the cross and its banner our glory shall be,

While we herald the tidings, “Salvation is free!” [Refrain]

3 To the work! to the work! there is labor for all;

For the kingdom of darkness and error shall fall;

And the name of Jehovah exalted shall be,

In the loud-swelling chorus, “Salvation is free!” [Refrain]

4 To the work! to the work! in the strength of the Lord,

And a robe and a crown shall our labor reward;

When the home of the faithful our dwelling shall be,

And we shout with the ransomed, “Salvation is free!” [Refrain]
